External preparations come in a wide variety of dosage forms, each with a different purpose and application. These preparations are viscous and maintain their shape, making them suitable for many skin conditions. 

• Ointments: Greasy, water-free, or nearly water-free preparations (typically 80% oil) that are highly effective for dry, scaly skin. They are occlusive, trapping moisture to hydrate the skin and increase drug absorption.
• Creams: Emulsions of oil and water that are less greasy than ointments and are easily absorbed. They provide a moisturizing and cooling effect. Depending on the ratio of oil to water, they can be either oil-in-water (O/W) or water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions.
• Pastes: Very thick, stiff preparations that contain a high concentration of powdered solids suspended in an ointment base. They are used for their drying and protective effects on wet or oozing skin conditions.
• Gels: Transparent or translucent semi-solids that often contain thickeners like natural gums. They can have a cooling effect as the water or alcohol evaporates and are popular for hairy areas.
